Rainfall Forecasting

A replicable rainfall foreasting system using global weather forecasts and a downscaling system using WRF (follow up of mm5) is available for the Mekong Basin. This system is mainly designed for water resources managers to obtain improved rainfall forecasts for management decision making.

A demonstration of the system in three domains is described at Rainfall Downscaling System. You need to register to access the system. Please contact unu and request for a username/password to access the system.

Daily forecasts for the Mekong Basin as well as some experimental basins are given in the Water Management Site .

Landcover Information

A 250 m grid resolution landcover map has been made from Modis data mosaic for the month of February. This high resoultion data set is expected to improve the predictions of mathermatical models used for water resources simulations. The map is shownn in the main page of this site and will be shortly available trhough GIS webb server from this site.

Elevation Data

A number of global elevation data sets for the Mekong Basin has been analyzed for the applicability of hydrological studies. An examination of Horton Geomorphological parameters calcualted for various sub catchments in the Mekong basin has shown these data produce Bifurcation, Length and Area ratios constent with Horton Laws for catchment morphology. For flood applications a little modification is required to improve the elevation data in the vicinity of rivers. Using directional digitized stream network the elevation an elevation data set has been produced that can reproduce computed streams to match the actual stream networks. An expalanation of the methodology is given in Mekong Elevation Data paper.
